Ken Emes background

Started apprenticeship in 1970 with Commercial Electric, working in commercial construction including Stettler High School, Red Deer College, apartment buildings, office complex’s and warehouses.  Upon completion of my apprenticeship in 1973 I moved to Slave Lake and worked for Norwestern Industrial Services as an Electrical Superintendent.  I was in charge of Ziedler Plywood, original project and stud mill, Alberta Aspen Board construction power and a camp to house Alberta Aspen Board and Chevron workers.  I started Emesco Electric in 1974 and completed the Slave Lake arena, IGA, Bayview Aircraft hanger and other electrical projects and service work. In 1977 through 1978 I was In charge of 2 housing projects for Syncrude employees, Fort McMurray, including approximately 1500 apartment units, 81 condominium s and a recreation center.  In 1979 to 1982 I worked for Northview Electric in construction around Slave Lake including the Weldwood renovation of Alberta Aspen Board. In 1982 I went to work as a Maintenance Electrician for Home Oil in Swan Hills. In 1989 I moved to Edmonton to work for Nova an Alberta Corporation as a senior maintenance planner. With the merge of TransCanada Pipelines and Nova I moved back to Slave Lake and worked for TransCanada Pipelines as an Operating Technician. In 2003 I took an early retirement package from TransCanada Pipelines and went to work with Emes Electric. At Emes Electric I solicited, organized and completed my own work. Major projects included  Tolko Industries/Weyerhaeuser) OSB plant contract maintenance and continuous improvement projects, Atco Electric expansion and renovation, Slave Lake downtown revitalization project  and the Slave Lake Government Centre and Library.

 In 2011 with partners Maureen Emes, Darcy Emes, Brad Emes and Holly Emes we incorporated a new company called Taranis Electric Ltd. We look forward to serving the Slave Lake area and helping to rebuild Slave Lake and area recently devastated by fire.  Our hearts go out to those who suffered loses in this tragedy and the many volunteers and Public Servants who gave so selflessly in their time of need.    

Other Interests

In my younger years I was actively involved in any sport that was available. I participated in Track and Field, Baseball, Basketball, Volleyball, Curling and Hockey.  I love to fish, hunt and spend time with family. I have coached girl’s fastball, bantam girl’s basketball and pretty much every level of boy’s hockey and baseball.  I have always enjoyed watching local sports and activities especially when I have family involved. I recently enjoyed watching my grand daughter, Morgan Lacombe, finish 3rd in the 400 meter race in the provincial finals.


Darcy Emes electrical experience,


Started apprenticeship in 1998 with Emes Electric, worked in residential, commercial, industrial (sawmill), construction.  Transferred apprenticeship to Grizzly Electric and worked in oilfield construction.  Finished apprenticeship with Emes Electric, working on, Oriented Strand Board (OSB) plant maintenance and construction projects (2004). Employed mainly by Emes Electric, working on a variety of construction and maintenance projects until 2011, also worked some small oilfield plant turnarounds and one modernization project.


Recent major projects,

Campcorp re-locatable structures Kirby Lakes Project, electrical, data cabling and fire alarm system installation; responsible for installation, quality control and meeting construction deadlines.

Slave Lake Government Center and Library commercial office complex construction; responsible for power distribution and emergency power distribution systems installations.

Shell Waterton modernization project; oilfield plant modernization, worked in control room installation of Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) associated wiring and equipment.

Tolko Industries Slave Lake (formerly Weyerhaeuser) OSB plant contract maintenance, responsible for day to day maintenance, troubleshooting PLC, production shift coverage, and construction/continuous improvement projects.

Safety Mission

The Taranis Electric safety mission is to provide quality advice and education for our management and staff that will reduce human suffering, equipment damage, environmental damage and financial costs associated with workplace incidents.

This quality advice will primarily be in the form of education, training, information and resource material to our members:  managers, supervisors and workers.  Our key objectives are providing Safety Training, Safe Work Procedures, Safe Work Plans, and Job Hazard Management that will help protect our employees, customers, equipment, the public and the environment.
